  • Jewellery Care Tips

    • Store your jewellery in an airtight bag or box when you are not wearing it. This should help to prevent the air from tarnishing your jewellery, especially if it is silver.

    • If possible wrap each item in acid free tissue paper or store seperately so items do not scratch each other.

    • Store jewellery in cool, dry conditions if possible.

    • To keep your jewellery clean you can wash with hand hot water, washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The toothbrush is good to remove dirt from under stones and in filigree or claw settings. Please avoid putting beaded threaded items in water for example pearls or semi-precious beads.

Bicarbonate of soda can be used with warm water and tin foil to aid the removal of tarnish. After washing make sure that the item is dried thoroughly. If the item is old or delicate seek advice from an established jeweller. Contact us for further advice if you are unsure of cleaning your jewellery.

    • Cleaning solutions are available to purchase where you dip your jewellery into the liquid to aid removal of tarnish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use with porous materials such as pearls, turquoise or coral. After use, rinse well and dry thoroughly, an soft cloth with polish within it, can brighten the end result.

    • Try to keep contact with perfumes, lotions and cosmetics away from your jewellery. Apply before putting on your jewellery.

    • To avoid loss or damage try and remove jewellery before gardening, exercising, housework or other physical work.

    • Hot weather, perspiration, bright sunlight, salt and chlorine can all damage your jewellery.

    • Items with a highly polished finish will gain scratches whilst being worn, this gives the item its unique character. You can have them re-polished by an established jeweller.

    • Items with a satin/matt finish will burnish up over time. To retain the satin finish use a soft kitchen scourer and cream cleaner in an even action over the item, rinse and dry well.

    • Gold plated items can be brightened up by careful washing, do not rub as the plate will come off.

When measuring your size there are a few things to be aware of: • Firstly your fingers will change size slightly throughout the day. Physical activity, the time of day and temperature all have an effect.

    • It’s advisable not to measure your finger when your hands are very cold, your finger can be up to half size smaller at this time. Also measuring in winter will show a difference in size when a measurement is taken in summer.

    • A ring with a wider band will require a larger size.

    • Your ring should fit comfortably, feeling snug enough when you wear it that it won’t slip off, but still be able to fit over your knuckle when you take it off.

    • Rings outside the standard size range can be specially made to order and these will be non-exchangeable or refundable .

    • We can resize rings and there is charge for this service, please contact us to arrange an appointment. Some rings are straight forward and others will require a stone to be removed before soldering, a use of a laser is possible with precious metals to avoid removing the stone.
